EDITH GUNTER HARRIS Edith Gunter Harris, a resident of Grace Nursing Home in Clinton, a Texas native, and a former resident of Baker, died a peaceful death on Dec. 8, 2009 at Grace Nursing Home. She was 85, born on April 17, 1924 in Joaquin, Texas, and a graduate of Joaquin High School. She was considered by all who knew her to be a kind, considerate, thoughtful and gracious lady. Visitation will be at Baker Funeral Home, 6401 Groom Rd, Baker, on Friday, Dec. 11, 2009 from 9am until religious serivces in the funeral home chapel at 11am, conducted by the Rev. Freddie Henderson. The committal service will take place in the chapel immediately following the funeral. Interment will take place at 2pm Monday, Dec. 14, 2009 at Port Hudson National Cemetery in Zachary. Edith is survived by two sons, Carlton Harris and wife, Rachael of Baker, and Mark Harris of Baton Rouge; two brothers, Birl Gunter and wife Gloria of Tanaha, TX and Perry Gunter and wife Lyndal of Houston; grandsons, Jamie Harris of Miami, Oklahoma, and Mark Lynn Harris of Baton Rouge; great grandchildren, Hunter Haylee Harris of Zachary; goddaughters Holly Sessions of Houston and Megan Favre of The Woodlands, TX; special friend from Grace Nursing Home,Margarite Hebert; and numerious nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, James L. Harris, PhD; father R.L. Gunter; mother Lula Blanch Priester Gunter; sisters Catherine Reeves, Myrtie Barnett, Lucille Holt, and Lurlene Oates; and brothers Roger, Lamar, Coswell, Tommy, Jimmy, and Harold Gunter. Edith and Jim were active members of St. Paul's Methodist Church for many years and will be remembered with great affection for the active part they played in the life of their church. Edith was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a dear and valued friend to those who knew her well. All who entered her home received a gracious welcome and were touched by the warmth of her spirit. Her life was spent in service to others, and all who knew her were beneficiaries of her kind and generous heart. Special thanks are extended from the Harris family to Dr. Michael DeJohn, and to Paul and Frieda Thompson of Clinton; and to Mr. Sid Saint, Mrs. Pat Chaney, and all the nursing staff at Grace Nursing Home and Gulf States LTAC.
